Finding the best proxies for the solar UV irradiance

چکیده
[1] Solar UV emission has a profound impact on the upper terrestrial atmosphere. Because of instrumental constraints, however, solar proxies often need to be used as substitutes for the solar spectral variability. Finding proxies that properly reproduce specific spectral bands or lines is an ongoing problem. Using daily observations from 2003 to 2008 and a multiscale statistical approach, we test the performance of 9 proxies for the UV solar flux. Their relevance is evaluated at different time-scales and a novel representation allows all quantities to be compared simultaneously. This representation reveals which proxies are most appropriate for different spectral bands and for different time scales.Citation: Dudok de Wit, T., M. Kretzschmar, J. Lilensten, and T. Technical guide to Set Up a Spectral Solar Direct Normal Irradiance Permanent Station: Study Area- Hannover, Germany
The spectral Direct Normal Irradiance (SDNI) is a basic radiometric quantity from which many other quantities can be derived. It provides not only information about the spectral and distribution of the direct solar radiation reaching a particular location. Accurate knowledge about the spectral direct irradiance shall enable us to gain new scientific results in the: determination of cloud effect...
متن کاملQuality assessment of solar UV irradiance measured with array spectroradiometers
The reliable quantification of ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the earth’s surface requires accurate measurements of spectral global solar UV irradiance in order to determine the UV exposure to human skin and to understand long-term trends in this parameter. Array spectroradiometers (ASRMs) are small, light, robust and cost-effective instruments, and are increasingly used for spectral irradiance ...
متن کاملEstimation of Global Solar Irradiance Using a Novel combination of Ant Colony Optimization and Empirical Models
In this paper, a novel approach for the estimation of global solar irradiance is proposed based on a combination of empirical correlation and ant colony optimization. Empirical correlation has been used to estimate monthly average of daily global solar irradiance on a horizontal surface. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm has been applied as a swarm-intelligence technique to tune the c...
متن کاملCreation of a Composite Solar Ultraviolet Irradiance Data Set
Characterization of long-term solar ultraviolet (UV) irradiance variations is important for understanding the radiative forcing of Earth’s atmosphere. Extending such a characterization to multidecadal time scales requires the merging of multiple satellite data sets. Currently available irradiance data sets show both absolute offsets and time-dependent differences that vary between spectral rang...
متن کاملUV Irradiance Enhancements by Scattering of Solar Radiation from Clouds
Scattering of solar radiation by clouds can reduce or enhance solar global irradiance compared to cloudless-sky irradiance at the Earth’s surface. Cloud effects to global irradiance can be described by Cloud Modification Factors (CMF). Depending on strength and duration, irradiance enhancements affect the energy balance of the surface and gain of solar power for electric energy generation. In t...
